Ross Residence
Malibu, CA
Addition/Remodel: 6,800 s.f.
Date completed: under construction

Located in the hills of Malibu, this site has commanding ocean and canyon views. The addition includes a gym, playroom, arts and crafts deck, office and observatory. The remodel includes rebuilding the entire Master Wing, Living Room, Foyer, and Dining Room.

Cozen Architecture was asked to create a cutting edge custom residence using as much of the existing contemporary house as possible. Cozen Architecture’s main concept began as a desire to integrate interior and exterior spaces. Breaking through the existing closed Entryway, a new glass Foyer gives the only perspective to the site as a whole. A carpet of stained concrete begins at the entry and flows through the Foyer spilling out to the exterior dining courtyard.

At the existing Living Room a large fireplace, nook, and sitting area blocked the ocean view. Cozen Architecture replaced this barrier with glass and extended the room. Warmth and interest is added through the use of new materials such as Ebony, cherry, polished stained concrete, syndecrete and stainless steel.

The new Master Bedroom becomes an organic volume with its undulating cedar tongue and groove ceiling and floating teak bed wall. Another large fireplace and inglenook blocked the canyon views. This was replaced with a smaller, intimate fireplace and glass, opening up the view. The Master Bath uses six colors of glass tile, copper, teak and limestone. The custom glass and teak pullmans are floating furniture pieces within the open plan. The frameless glass shower enclosure and glass window beyond obscure the sense of any barrier to the outside. A boulder is placed in the shower, used as a seat, bringing the garden inside.

In the new Playroom, doors slide open to create an outdoor arts and crafts playroom. One entire exterior wall of Trespa panels becomes a canvas or easel for any artist at work.
