BEACH HOUSE

Malibu, CA
Size: 4,926 s.f.
2003

This 3.2 acre site is located on the bluffs of North Malibu. The existing residence was a Polynesian style. The North side of the house had settled considerably and had mold contamination.

The concept began as a French Farmhouse creating a patina from the passage of time. The varied roof shapes create a village against the dramatic landscape. Each roof is specified with slightly different tile colors to enhance the layering. Stone walls and exterior plaster walls are intertwined. Although much of the footprint is intact, the layout was completely re-organized to allow for a better flow. Natural light pours in through direct and indirect paths. Mystery and drama are encountered entering the private, shaded Entrada, then the stone walled Foyer and finally, as you turn the corner towards the Living Room the panoramic view of Ocean and Beach surround you. A sense of privacy is created beyond in a secret garden.
